Did you know you can submit to dA via email?

FAQ #441: How do I upload to my Sta.sh?

correction: rotane rightly pointed out that, derp, email uploads were introduced to dA for sta.sh (not the original prints program), which makes it only a few years old. Taking this into consideration I've re-written aspects of my original musings.

Over a decade ago blogging platforms like Wordpress and MovableType let you specify a secret email account that you would use to post content for your blog. Back then there was a transition period where phones had e-mail but partial or no internet access, and so something like this would allow you to post to your blog while away from your computer.

Submitting via email might seem a bit strange these days, but if you want to submit something to deviantart from your phone it's actually the best method at the moment.

You can submit from the dA mobile app, but it has a major flaw in that it forces you to upload at mobile-friendly resolutions. You get a choice of High, Medium, and Low - but  even if you choose High what you end up with is a heavily compressed JPEG that isn't even 720p. I'd expect High to be the original actual file 1:1 - but it's not.

So, to ask the question again, why would I want to submit via mobile?

The laptop I use at home is my mum's old beater. It works well enough for it's age, but I can't process the X3F raw files that come out of my Sigma digital cameras. Instead I process my photos on other people's computers, saving the final output onto an external drive.

But here's the thing, the laptop I have at home has a terrible screen. I get everything looking how I want on the other screens, and then when I'm at home ready to get my deviantart groove on... everything looks like shit. It's hard to judge what to upload when they all look caca

So after a eureka! moment and a story of adventure and self discovery, I now browse through my photos on the external drive/NAS using my trusty Nexus 7. It has a nice screen. Any images I want to upload I share to the email adress I set up, and later on my computer I visit my stash and complete the submission process. All's well in the world.

It's not that of an old feature. I think it got introduced when sta.sh launched; the FTP-upload however, yes, that's been around for as long as the prints program, IIRC. :)
