This was shot way back when we were in Melbourne last. Steadied on a bollard while Nadia and I waited for Andrew to bring his car around from his secret parking garage. Comments
That is amazing, you have the composition set up perfectly to make it seem kind of empty. The monocromatic colors also give more into despair, and that creates the atmosphere more powerfully.
Then the lack of human life, like no trash, nor any animals just create a more materialistic enviroment deviod of emotion and warmth. It could in turn symbolize what happens when one gives up everything that is human to get only material items... that person gets a cold, empty feeling. I am throughly happy with your photo. Though, on thing does bother me in the picture... I guess I would have liked to have seen the car bigger... but that's just me. All in all, a very nice picture. I saw this before I read the title and thought "Matt would like that"

Immediately the painted lines of the car parking spaces draw the eye to the car which is the centre-piece of the picture. The fact that the building appears to be closed creates a sense of loneliness around the car, but not without a slight sense of hope derived from the fact that the area is seemingly quite well lit.
This lighting has been used to great advantage by the photographer, combining with near-perfect exposure that gives wonderful contrast to the photo and a movie-like sense of light and shadow on the car. The choice to go with black and white with this photo must have been a no-brainer and it works extremely well and creates a real sense of atmosphere and completion with the image.
The composition of the piece really helps bring out everything within it. It helps you notice things which may not have been immediately apparent: the traffic cone, the small stand and the posters on the left-most wall.
This is, then, a very well-captured scene and one that works to great effect both as a photograph in itself and as a tool for the viewer to make their own story. It wouldn't go amiss on the walls of many fans of contemporary black and white photography I would imagine.
