Artist's CommentsA while ago I volunteered to be a guest journal designer for *Express--Yourself, a group that runs themed contests to win the current journal design. After a few false starts I came up with the above design, which you can play around with in the live preview. Have fun with the tabs, and that odd man on the left there. The following resources proved to be a fundamental influence in the making of this skin, without them all I would have had was another false start. The journal background is thanks to `tExTuReMaTtIc - backside, and the photo of the man thanks to ~DustyOldStock - Old Poser. --- The main challenge in a journal like this is making the background tile, but still blend with the footer - because you can never be sure where the footer will connect with the body. It involves a lot of swearing at 160kb pngs until they become 58kb After that... there isn't much to it code-wise really, it's not that complicated a stylesheet. The nature of it meant it had to be fixed width, so the tabs look a bit broken when viewing the journal from the userpage at 1024x768 (and the right side is cut short too) - but it looks fine in full view. I guess I could <cut> out the tabs and have them only appear in full-view... hmm. Advanced critique encouraged. Comments
Looks great, looks old, tarnished and antique, however there's a few things that could be improved with the textures and details.
Like the tabs to the right, they sort of look a bit like an easy fix solution, they look very simple and they could use a bit more depth to signal that it's a book or a stack of papers you're looking at. Same goes for the photo, it's very simply implemented and it doesn't nearly look as antique as the rest of the journal. As it goes for many older photos, many tarnished features would be stuff like the plastic covering which cracks as it's bent and dried up and the corners starts to floss or is ripped.. Oh and, older photos were never developed with a white border. If anything I would suggest that you try to use staples and paperclips for both the photo and the tabs to the right, would make an excellent feature. Oh and the font, have you checked how it looks with a Georgia / Times font, I think it'd look like an old newspaper like that. Great design none the less, great paper texture. |
